| Like in all surgical procedure, complications can arise in the sequence of implant rehabilitation, they can be immediately post-operating or after several years. Also they require proper care and maintenance from the patient.
Complications:
They are divided into three categories:
Post Surgery Complications
Integration Time Complications
Post Prosthetic Complications
Post-operative complication can happen within the first days after implants placement or graft procedures. They are usually; swelling, pain, bleeding, nausea, possible infections or partial numbness in certain areas. Most of these factors are normal responses to a surgery, they can be controlled by an adequate medication, pressure or by the application of cold compressions, relative to infections, and most patients are medicated before the surgery. Numbness can happen after the surgery in the low maxilla, at the inferior lip and chin or one side of the tongue, these can be for short or long periods of time and it is caused by the temporary pressure on the nerve and the mechanical manipulation on it.
Complications during the integration time, we only mention two causes; exposure of the surgical site (implants, grafts, membrane, etc,), and implant rejection. Implant site exposure, this is when the implant upper part can be seen through the gum or exposure of the grafted site. This normally eliminates the procedure to uncover the implant, but if the graft site is exposed, it causes a great problem and you must contact immediately to your doctor. Implant rejection. With implants used at the present time the rejection percentage is the minimum. Smoking increases the possibility of implant rejection. The nicotine, as a vasoconstrictor, limits blood supply to sugary site, affecting healing and osseointegration. Finally, another cause is a poor surgery technique (bone overheated, etc.) Post-prosthetic complications imply everything that happens as much as with the implant as with the prosthesis once the implant is in function.
